FAQs

Q: When do I show up and where is registration?  How do I check in?

Lavender Inn, 210 E Matilija St, Ojai, CA 93023

                Wednesday, July 2nd from 2:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Outside those hours, call host cell.

Q: How do I sign up for e-bike tour?  Hiking?  Saturday museum tour?  Other stuff?

See the sign-ups link on this website

Q: Is there transportation from the airport?  I don’t need a car, right?

Right.  For platinum (4-day) participants flying into Santa Barbara (SBA), Los Angeles (LAX), or Burbank (BUR), direct ground transportation via SUV will be available to class members and their guests for arrivals on Wednesday, July 2 between 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.   Also, Ventura Amtrak station at other hours.  Otherwise, commercial rental car and shuttle services are plentiful.  Contact Dave Hicks via text 415.301.9290 with ground logistics concerns or pickup confirmation.

Q: Is anyone driving down from the Bay Area for ’86 in Ojai?

Probably.  Network through the WhatsApp thread.

Q: Is there are reunions “crew” to help with check-in, baggage, special requests, etc.?

Yes. Look for white t-shirts bearing orange P and their special wristbands - they’re mostly 20-somethings and they’re on hand to make things easy for you, provide local info, and help you find your lost reading glasses (they’re atop you hat, on your head, by the way).

Q: What’s the deal with morning yoga?

It’s part of the 86 in Ojai experience.  No extra charge.  Everyone welcome: newbies or daily pandiculators.  If you can breathe, you can do yoga.  Anna wrote us a letter – find it here. Great way to start at 8:00 a.m. Have no fear.

Q: How can everyone from ’86 fit into the limited capacity of the Lavender Inn?

They can’t.  We have multiple hotels for lodging.  Verify your room assignment and roommate at registration desk on July 2 at Lavender Inn, which will be the “main venue” for activities, including Saturday’s dinner.  Other lodging is within walking distance.

Q: What is “McCosh West”?

We have reserved a conference area and A/V space offsite for scheduled speaking events.  The Center for Sane Living can also serve as a workspace or study hall (if you simply can’t avoid doing WORK during a reunion…ahem) since you want to be respectful of your peers who are relaxing at the hotel.  Hours of access are limited.  Contact Mitch Boring for details. (805 218 8089)

Q: Should I bring my class jacket?

Always welcome but not required.  Evenings only, due to high daytime temps.

Q: Dietary restrictions?  Medical or mobility concerns?

Let us know at check-in or talk to a crew member.

Q: Is the trip to Channel Islands National Park by boat Thursday morning a basic ‘three-hour tour’?  ‘A three-hour tour?’

No, more than that.  At present this excursion is sold out, but we can ask about cancelations on the eve of departure. Limited group trip to beautiful Santa Cruz Island features a boat journey across the channel, available kayaking and extensive scenic hikes; about 4.5 hours on the island and approximately 7 hours round trip.  Shuttle leaves Ojai very early morning.

Q: Can I still make it to Rachel’s Sister Blue Sky Ranch for drinks and dinner if I go on the Channel Islands excursion?”

Yep. A shuttle will take you and other Classmates from port directly to Carpinteria for the big, beautiful banquet.  Rachel says you can change clothes at her place if you’re polite and tidy.  You probably won’t have time to go to your hotel first.  Plan ahead.

Q: What is the book selection for the 2:00  poolside book group club discussion on Thursday?

On the Fringe: Where Science Meets Pseudoscience by Michael D. Gordin

Q: Where do I go for unlimited coffee in the morning?  Where do I show my wristband?

Java & Joe is a short walk away.  In fact, it’s across the quaint street from McCosh West.  We have an arrangement with them.  Coffee if you have a wristband.

Q:  What about breakfast?

That is ALSO included with your wristband, but at the quaint Three Birds Café and only prior to 10:00 am.  After that time each day your wristband is invisible to them.  Truly a great place for breakfast and we have our own seating area.  Ask at registration.

Q: What about hiking?  Is there a guided hike with amazing views of the Ojai Valley?

See the sign-ups link on this website

Q: How do I sign up for spa treatments?

Ask at your hotel front desk, or we have some recommendations in town.  Everything is nearby.  Not included in wristband offerings – sorry.

Q: Where’s the ice cream?

Your wristband can be used for a cup of Tiger Stripe ice cream at a local shop – ask a member of your crew.

Q: What should I wear to the Fireworks Cruise on Friday?  Is it formal?'

The best thing to wear is a smart watch so you are NOT LATE.  You’ll want to be in the area around 6:00 p.m. for a drink with check-in and we board at 6:50 p.m..  The boat truly will leave the dock at 7:15. No exception.  Dress is smart casual with a sweater or jacket for warmth (yes, in spite of hot days, the evening on the water will be very cool).

Q: What happens if I'm late for the Fireworks Cruise?

We’ll miss you, but there are places to eat and wait for our return if you want to stay in the Channel Islands Harbor area.  Or you can get transportation back to the hotel and get a good night’s sleep for Saturday events.

Q: On Saturday I want to go with Rachel to the Santa Barbara Museum of Art for a guided private tour of their collections.  How do I get on the list?  Is space limited?
